PLA vs PETG: what your 3D-printed piece is made of, and how to care for it

The two plastics behind most 3D-printed home and desk pieces, how they differ in strength and heat, and simple care tips so your piece lasts.

Updated October 3, 2026

The short version

Most 3D-printed pieces, including ours, are made from one of two plastics: PLA or PETG. Both are durable for everyday use. The difference that matters most at home is heat: PETG handles warmth better, while PLA gives the crispest detail and finish.

Every product page lists the material, so you always know what you're getting.

PLA: crisp detail and a clean finish

PLA (polylactic acid) is made from plant starches and is the most widely used 3D-printing material. It prints sharp edges and fine detail, and it comes in the widest range of colors.

  • Best for: desk organizers, nameplates, display pieces, awards and decor.
  • Strength: rigid and strong for everyday handling.
  • Watch out for: high heat. PLA starts to soften well below boiling, so keep it out of hot cars and away from heaters.

PETG: tougher and more heat-tolerant

PETG is a close cousin of the plastic used in drink bottles. It's slightly flexible, so it resists cracking from knocks, and it tolerates more warmth than PLA.

  • Best for: wall mounts, tool and workshop holders, pieces that take bumps, and spots that get warm (like a sunny windowsill).
  • Strength: tough, with a little give that helps it survive impacts.
  • Finish: usually a little glossier than PLA.

Caring for your piece

  • Clean it with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then dry it.
  • Skip the dishwasher: hot water and detergent can warp or dull the surface.
  • Keep it out of hot cars and away from radiators, stoves and heat vents, especially PLA.
  • Avoid harsh solvents like acetone, which can mark the surface.
  • Direct sun is fine indoors, but strong sun over years can slowly fade some colors.

Which should you choose?

You don't usually have to: we pick the material that suits each product's job, and list it on the product page. If you're ordering something custom for a hot or demanding spot, mention it in your request and we'll design with the right material.
